1982 Kinnego Embankment murders to be focus of new investigation

Operation Kenova lead, former Chief Constable Jon Boutcher, is to head a separate investigation into the murder of three RUC officers at Kinnego Embankment in County Armagh on 27 October 1982.

Mr Boutcher will lead the independent investigation into the deaths of Sergeant Sean Quinn and Constables Allan McCloy and Paul Hamilton, at the request of Police Service Northern Ireland Chief Constable Simon Byrne.

Mr Boutcher said: "I have met with the families of the three officers and have assured them of my commitment to this investigation.

"All they have ever wanted is to find out the truth of what happened to their loved ones, and I will do everything in my power to establish that for them.

"They have shown great dignity over the years and have asked for the press to respect their privacy - I would echo that to allow my team to focus on the investigation."

This is the third investigation being led by Mr Boutcher, with independent reviews already underway into Operation Kenova – a complex and wide-ranging investigation into allegations of murder, kidnap and torture dating back to the 1970s - and also the death of Jean Smyth-Campbell who was shot dead while sitting in a car on the Glen Road in west Belfast on 8 June, 1972.
